Steven Torres is the author of PRECINCT PUERTO RICO: BOOK ONE, DEATH IN PRECINCT PUERTO RICO: BOOK TWO and BURNING PRECINCT PUERTO RICO: BOOK THREE (Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin's Minotaur), the first novels in a mystery series featuring Luis Gonzalo, the sheriff of Angustias, a fictionalized small town nestled in the mountainous heart of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. The third book was published in June 2004. The fourth should arrive in early 2006.
Steven was born in the Bronx in 1969. Steven's parents moved to the United States from Puerto Rico in the 1950's. In 1980, Steven and his family briefly moved to the outskirts of a small town in western Puerto Rico called Moca. Moca was part of the inspiration for the fictionalized town of Angustias.
Back in New York a year and a half later, Steven attended Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. After graduation, he worked for the New York Public Library for seven years while going to college part-time. In 1994, he graduated from Hunter College with a B.A. in English with honors.
Steven received his Ph.D. in English in 2002 from the City University of New York Graduate School and University Center. His field of concentration is literature of the American Renaissance. He has taught English at Bronx Community College and Yeshiva College in New York City as well as Utica College in upstate New York. In the Fall of 2004, he took on the position of Instructor of English at Manchester Community College.
In 1991, Steven married Damaris Carrero. Her hometown of Rincón, Puerto Rico figures prominently in PRECINCT PUERTO RICO: BOOK ONE. Currently, Steven lives in Ellington with his wife and is working on the next Luis Gonzalo novel.
